The MQ-5 sensor features tin oxide (SnO2) as its sensitive material, which has low conductivity in clean air. When combustible gases like methane, propane, or butane are present, the sensor’s conductivity increases with gas concentration. A simple electronic circuit then converts this change in conductivity into an output signal that indicates the gas concentration. Its high sensitivity to methane, propane, and butane makes the MQ-5 a cost-effective choice for a wide range of gas detection applications.
