The Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module utilizes a bright infrared (IR) LED and a phototransistor to detect the pulse of the finger, indicated by a flashing red LED with each pulse.
When the finger is placed between the LED and the phototransistor, the LED emits light onto one side of the finger, while the phototransistor receives the light on the other side. As the blood pressure pulse in the finger alters, the resistance of the phototransistor changes slightly.
To ensure sensitivity, a very high resistance resistor R1 is chosen, as most light passing through the finger is absorbed. The resistor value can be determined through experimentation to achieve optimal results, with the primary focus on preventing stray light from reaching the phototransistor.
This shielding against stray light is particularly crucial in-home environments where lighting often fluctuates at 50Hz or 60Hz frequencies, which can introduce noise and interfere with faint heartbeat detection.
