The KY-032 IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module is an affordable and effective solution for obstacle detection in robotics and various electronic applications.
The module comes pre-assembled with four pins: +5V, GND, Output, and EN. It features an active LOW output and an onboard LED indicator, which makes it easy to interface with Arduino or similar microcontrollers. It is also compatible with Raspberry Pi, operating within a voltage range of 3-6V, with Vcc typically set to 3V.
The “EN” (Enable) pin controls the module’s operation. Setting it to HI (Vcc) disables the sensor, while setting it to LO (GND) enables it. The onboard jumper allows for external control of the enable/disable function, but it is generally recommended to leave it connected and keep the pin disconnected as the default setting.
The module includes two potentiometers: one for adjusting the operating frequency (centered at 38 kHz) and another for intensity. It uses a 555 timer-based oscillator circuit tuned to 38 kHz. While adjusting the potentiometers may slightly extend the detection range, it’s best to use the default settings. In testing, the maximum reliable range was approximately 30-40 cm, which varied depending on surface material; smooth white surfaces performed better than black or rough surfaces.
