Description

The PICKIT2 Programmer from Microchip Technology is widely recognized for its reliability, versatility, and affordability in programming and debugging PIC microcontrollers. Designed for hobbyists, students, and professional embedded developers, PICkit programmers support a broad range of PIC microcontrollers and EEPROM devices, making them essential tools for microcontroller development, testing, and debugging tasks.

The earlier PICkit 1 was an all-in-one unit, but the improved PICkit 2 introduced a more flexible design with a separate programmer/debugger module that connects to a target board via an ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) header. This allows developers to program microcontrollers directly on custom PCBs without the need to remove the chip—an important feature for prototyping and embedded system development. Although not intended for high-volume production programming, the PICkit 2 delivers exceptional performance for education, prototyping, and engineering work.

Powered by an internal PIC18F2550 microcontroller with Full-Speed USB support, the PICkit 2 is capable of programming and debugging most 8-bit and 16-bit PICmicro and dsPIC devices. One of its major advantages is its fully open-source design, including hardware schematics, firmware source code in C, and application software in C#. This openness enables developers to modify the hardware or software to add enhanced features such as Linux compatibility, command-line tools, and custom interfaces.

A defining feature of the PICkit 2 is its Programmer-To-Go (PTG) functionality, which allows the device to store hex files and programming instructions in onboard I²C EEPROM (128 KB standard, expandable to 256 KB). This enables standalone operation without a PC, making field updates and remote programming significantly easier. The PICkit 2 also includes a 500 kHz three-channel logic analyzer and UART tool, features that are notably absent in the PICkit 3.

With its robust feature set, open-source flexibility, and long-standing reliability, the PICkit 2 remains a favored choice for developers working with PIC microcontrollers.
